An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre presents ‘Plot to pot – grow, preserve, eat” Gardening & Preserving for Beginners’ and Improvers with Moira Byrne Come join us at the An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre as we explore the food we eat, growing it ourselves and eating it all year round in light of climate change and the biodiversity crisis and what we can do about it. Why grow your own, how do you start planning? What’s essential for growing your seeds and using your soil? How to use companion plants and insects as natural pest control. Planning your plot to enrich soil, avoid pests, invasive species and weeds, and of course battling slugs.

We also cover seed buying and planting. The day will start with a presentation by Moira Byrne. Tea & coffee will be served before heading out into our gardens for a practical demonstration on how to grow our own vegetables. A delicious lunch will served incorporating organic vegetables and produce from our organic farm. The afternoon session will focus on how to preserve produce grown in your garden, covering the “forgotten skills” of preserving – canning, fermenting & jam making. This will include both a classroom presentation and practical demonstration. You will also get a chance to taste the produce – pickled vegetables & chutneys.

About Moira Byrne

Moira worked as Environmental Awareness Officer with Wicklow County Council for over 20 years. She has a background in medical science, geography and environmental management …as well as growing her own food all her life. Moira will discuss tangible ways of understanding climate adaptation through growing and eating food, getting in touch with nature and enhancing biodiversity. Moira believes that we can all live sustainability through trying to live differently. Growing your own food is a tangible means of understanding the food we eat and climate adaptation and mitigation. It also provides a route to get in touch with nature and enhance general environmental awareness. Your garden becomes a supermarket from which you get most of your food for the week along with preserving for year-long use. About An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre

An Tairseach Organic Farm and Ecology Centre has allowed nature to flourish in all its glory. The farm in Wicklow Town has been at the forefront of the organic food movement acquiring organic status back in 2006. It acquired organic status in 2006. This was the culmination of several years of intensive work, clearing the soil of chemicals, restoring its fertility, improving hedgerows, laying out pathways and planting thousands of trees. The farm now produces an abundance of organic vegetables as well as organic beef and pork. There is a large garden with polytunnels at the back of the Ecology Centre building and a 70-acre site up on the hill.  As well as the vegetables and animal grazing areas there is also a wildlife conservation area and a thriving woodland.
