Earth Day – let’s work together to reduce carbon emissions
Wicklow NaturallyToday is Earth Day, its 50th anniversary, and Earth Day Network’s mission is to build the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and also the planet.
According to the Earth Day Network almost every country in the world has failed to meet the goals set out by the Paris Climate Accord which is the international agreement to limit global warming.
We have 10 years left to halve carbon emissions to avoid a climate catastrophe and that’s according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Wicklow Naturally stands for sustainability and our members strive to do what they can to be sustainable. We encourage our members to think sustainably and act sustainably.
Working Together
Pamela Walsh of Wicklow Way Wines (Winery) is helping to drive forwards the implementation of the county’s Food and Beverage Strategy.
Speaking on Earth Day 2020, Pamela said: “It may seem like a mammoth challenge to halve carbon emissions but this needs to be done to avoid the climate catastrophe highlighted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Wicklow Naturally businesses can all do something to reduce their carbon footprint and you’ll see, reading through our website, that we have businesses who are members of Origin Green and we have other businesses who are doing great things in terms of using green energy suppliers, sourcing as local as local can be, harvesting rain water and using compostable packaging. These are just some of the things our businesses are doing.
“As a food network, we want businesses to minimise the amount of food waste, re-use food waste for composting, reduce the use of paper in their daily operations and measure their carbon footprint.
The Garden of Ireland
“We are all living and working in The Garden of Ireland. We want to lead by example so we strive to operate ahead of the environmental curve which is why we ask our members to continue to build on their sustainable efforts while pledging to do at least one more thing to green their business.
“Everyone understands that sustainability is key. We are constantly facing challenges – both environmentally and socially. Wicklow Naturally encourages member businesses to create sustainable enterprises so we can add value as a food and drink network. There are so many actions businesses can implement. If we all did something we can showcase how in The Garden of Ireland we care about our planet.”
Earth Day Network is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 75,000 partners in over 190 countries to drive positive action for our planet. The network is asking people to commit to vote for the planet by looking at Earth Day Network’s campaign Vote Earth.
And today, on April 22, 2020 — Earth Day Network is asking people to join them for 24 hours of action
